Green Oak Timber Frames

Three Bay Oak Frame Garage

Oak Fronted Two Bay Garage
We are able to design, manufacture and raise Green Oak Timber Frames to customer specifications.
Working with customers architects and structural engineers we are able to create frames for traditional oak buildings from garages, conservatories and extensions to complete new build houses.
Working from our woodland workshop we source and select our material from UK suppliers and scribe each joint by hand ensuring a good fit off-site.
The frame is then transported "flat pack" and raised on site using a crane where necessary.

Shingles and Shakes

Cleft Oak Shingles Cleft oak shakes are a hardwood altenative to sawn cedar shingles. They require no treatment as oak naturally has a high durabilty.
Each shingle is split from an oak round using a froe. They are dressed if necessary to ensure they lie reasonably flat and taper slightly along the length, note that the exposed surface is left undressed to leave the grain intact, unlike sawn shingles where the grain is cut. For 6.5 inch batton spacing (on centre) shingles approx 15-16 inches long are laid and attached to the roof with stainless steel annular ring shank nails.
Different lengths can be made to order and we hold an amount of shingles in stock.

Bridges, Gates & Fences

We have supplied and installed a number of bridges and gates for public access woodland owned by Hampshire County Council. Our bridges are made from English green oak and use stainless steel fixings to ensure long life. The bridges are fixed to concrete foundations to ensure that erosion does not result in movement of the bridge.
A site visit is highly recomended by us to ensure that the bridges and soil types are suitable before an order is made.
To see a standard detail drawing of our bridges please e-mail us at enquiries@southdownsgreenwoodcentre.co.uk
Our gates are made to order and can be to any design within reason. Large gates are made from green oak and framed in the same manner as our green oak timber frame buildings. Smaller gates and field gates can be made from green oak or air/kiln dried oak with the cost depending on the material.

Benches & Outdoor Furniture

Green Oak Bench Front Left View
Green Oak Bench Front View
We can make oak benches to many designs. They are made only of english oak with all sap wood removed. the result is a long lasting peice of garden furniture that requires no treatment throughout it's life. Our green oak benches use traditional mortice and tenon joints where possible and discrete stainless steel fixings where necessary. Since green oak is used a certain amount of splitting and warping should be expected. Benches can be made from air dried oak to avoid this. The benches of the type in the image are available for £300.
The pegs are yet to be knocked in the image, as this bench was delivered flat packed and assembled on site.

Rustic Doors

Front of an Oak Brace and Ledger Door Back of and Oak Brace and Ledger Door These doors can be made from air dried oak or from green oak. Each board is tongue and grooved to the next to pevent gaps appearing. A cover strip is attached to the top and bottom of the doors to slow water damage to the endgrain of the wood. This increases the expected life of the door. Simple rim locks can be attached to the doors and frames to provide some security. The doors are held together using traditional rose head nails and concealed brass screws.
N.B. Oak doors will react with the iron in the rose head nails and leave a stain especially if allowed to get wet, this is especially true in Green Oak. Green oak doors may shrink and warp considerably especially if used inside a heated building. Frames should be made to accommodate this.
